The on-court intrusion Sunday in the French Open men’s final might have been scary for Roger Federer, but it was not without precedent during a Grand Slam tournament.
With Robin Soderling about to serve at 1-2, 15-0 in the second set, an intruder ran down a staircase in the lower section of the stands at Philippe Chatrier court, jumped over the barrier and onto Roger Federer’s half of the court.
There was a gap of more than 10 seconds between the moment the man, a serial publicity seeker, leapt onto the clay and the moment a security guard tackled him. That was enough time for him to approach Federer, brandish a banner at him and attempt to force a hat onto the startled Federer’s head.
